Ellen DeGeneres is out and proud!
To many viewers that’s not news, however, twenty years ago it was a VERY big deal. In case you forgot, back in 1997, Miz DeGeneres shocked fans when she came out as gay and subsequently made her character on her ABC sitcom (Ellen) interested in women too.
The two part episode, titled The Puppy Episode, originally aired on April 30 in ’97 and opened doors for more inclusive content on TV. So, it’s no wonder the funny lady is celebrating this milestone moment with an hour long special at the end of the month. And the 59-year-old is pulling out all of the stops as she’ll be joined on camera with none other than Oprah Winfrey herself.
As you may recall, Oprah played a major part in Ellen’s coming out process as the comedienne first revealed she was gay on the Queen of daytime TV’s show. DeGeneres’ former Ellen costars — including Joely Fisher, Clea Lewis, David Anthony Higgins, and Laura Dern — will appear on the upcoming tribute episode too. This will be the first reunion the celebrated comedy has had since the show ended in 1998.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the tribute episode will also feature messages from celebrities and fans about how The Puppy Episode impacted their lives. Be sure to mark your calendars on April 28, because we’re sure this tribute will be pretty memorable!
